prototypes, user testing
Problem
Today’s streaming platforms are not satisfying to audience.
Cutting off the real world
Losing connection with friends and family.
Heavy cognitive load
Not customizable enough; no integration;
lack of evaluation system.

People spend more and more time on visualized content as a way of recreation such as movie, episodes, short videos, etc. There's an increasing demand that people want good quality content using the least time to find them, and they stand against being "isolate and digitalized" status by paying more attention on connecting with people and relationships.
Solution
Socialized streaming app with content recommendation.

StreamBit provides audience a satisfying and exciting experience by connecting them with other users in socialized ways and providing an intelligent content recommendation algorithm on the platform.

Once the community is established, amount of streaming data and user preference under privacy and surveillance would be beneficial to streaming services, making it a win-win for streaming platforms to produce more good quality content which suits audience's tastes, and to develop peripheral products such as games, physical merchandise, etc.

Value Proposition (Do I need this here? How should I write as the content? Do I need to write as solving specific problems?)
What is a satisfying streaming experience.
Easy Navigation
Anyone can use it anywhere. No sample prep, no amplification, no refrigeration
Fun & Exciting
Always increase user's expectation and fulfill their emotional needs.
Personalization
Present personal style and emotions

Find Opportunities
To understand what's the overall streaming behaviors of our users and how they currently interact with the streaming platforms, we sent out a survey and received 33 responses. We found that 46% of our respondents using smartphone to watch online videos, and 59% of them choose the device to watch online videos because of the portability.
However, 25% of respondents don't have any streaming apps on their mobile device, 43.5% of respondents are not satisfied with paying for streaming.
So WHY?

"(If I) choose to pay for the streaming platforms, because they help me connect with friends."
"(If I) choose stop paying for the streaming services, that's because there are less frequent and related releases..."
51.5% of respondents shared videos or movies with others;
68.4% of them share videos with their friends via streaming app or group watching.
Goals (Do I need this here?)
Define product(app) requirements
Enable people to use a test kit to get tested and read the test result on a mobile phone or a tablet in 30 seconds.
Provide simple interfaces for users to run tests with no requirement to enter data.
Simplify the user guide with proper language and images/videos.

Enable audience to find what they'd like to watch and adding
Provide trustworthy evaluation system for users to filter content with authentic reviews from other users.

Here's the key roles in the ecosystem:
Audience
People use the streaming services and watch online. They use the app looking for content and reviews, share to friends and watch with people who have similar media tastes.
Friends, family and others
Connections and relationships are built through the streaming experience.
Streaming platforms
Streaming services such as content provider - NBC, Warner Bros, Netflix Original, streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock, etc
Uncover Insights
To dig deeper into user behavior and their pain points, my team and I interviewed 7 participants over Zoom.

The topics were focused on what they are expecting and their attitudes on costs plan, what’s the frustration during their streaming experience.
The question I focused on in the followed areas:
1. What causes frustration when they watching videos on their mobile device?
2. How they are expecting when streaming by themself and with their friends?
3. What’s their ideal streaming app?

Through interviews, I understood the major pain point and they have helped to work on individual pain points and on structuring the big picture as well. Here are key insights and the opportunities for each problem:

Most users like to stream with long distance friends, however they lack of connection with others - share with people, establish a relationship with others.

Recommendation
Group watch feature/share video link within the streaming app.

Recommendation
To build a "giant" streaming app which integrate the content from other streaming platforms.

Recommendation
Add in more personality to the app, such as "My list" and "Friend's list" as a way of customization

Recommendation
To build a "giant" streaming app which integrate the content from other streaming platforms. A platform to be able to watch content from different platforms without having to go from one app to another.

People have difficulty looking for the content that they want.

Participants mentioned they want to see more customization within the app, such as “My list" be more visible to remind them to watch the shows they marked;

Content intergration within various ecosystem like multi-device compatibility aka various device working together convenient and efficient to generate a smooth flow.
Competitors
How can we build an app that breaks into the market?

By analyzing existing solutions, we found inspirations and examined whether existing products can achieve a better streaming experience for personas.

I use 4 evaluation metrics as socialization, subscription, customization and algorithm to find and define the opportunity space. For streaming platforms, there’s an opportunity space for socialization and customization.

Painpoints:
  · Recommendation systems should be based on likes and dislikes, not on what’s trending or not (Netflix);
  · Prices are always changing and sometimes it’s not clear what the user is paying for (Disney and YT Premium);
  · Quality and functionality of the interface and the content itself should be a priority;
  · While users like personalization, the data tracking shouldn’t be extremely invasive.
Who It's For
Young professionals with busy schedules.
Based on our interview, young professionals and students are our main target user. They have packed time schedules and high needs for social life and networkings. Meanwhile, they’re keen on online sharing and content controversies.

How might we provide audience with seamlessly and better social experience when they’re streaming?

Ideation
I focused on three HMW questions to specify the solutions.

Crazy 8
We applied Crazy 8 method to draw sketches of ideas to answer the HMW questions above. During the sketching, we keep these three questions in mind:
What actions are they going to take?
How are they doing it?
What information are they seeking?
Lo-fi Wireframes
Based on the conceptual sketch design, we formed three main user flows as key functions in the app. During this phase, we want to explore more ideas while narrowing down to specific directions.
Design Principles
After analyzed the data I've collected from the research, I found people care mostly about the customizable, connectivity and accuracy of the streaming experience. According to the product requirements, the mobile app experience should also be reliable to gain people's trust. Thus, these are the fundamental pieces of guidelines and considerations that I came up with and applied.
Design Decisions (short term and long term?)
Based on the business strategy, an app with streaming lists, accurate filtering & recommendation, and better social experience while group watching is first major viable product in the short term. I proposed building the community as another feature after users forming the using habit for a while, and this feature could be left as an option in the long run.

After deciding the basic feature from our Lo-fi wireframes, we compiled a list of the top key tasks that users have during their streaming experiences.
Key Userflows
Based on low-fidelity wireframes, we created hi-fidelity prototypes for the streaming lists flow, filtering out content and schedule a group watch flow, chatting while group watching flow, and then went to four different people to get their feedback on the user experience for the iteration.
1. Filtering content & scheduling a group watch
User testing feedback:

2. Joining group watch & real-time chatting
